And for my sake let her be with you:

Thy holy friend, as long as he did be so,
Shall come to my lips, and sing of her;

And therefore shall I live, and thou shalt live,

And to thyself shall be born again,
And to the rest of this world shall it be,
And never shall not thy will be done;
That all that is right, but what is wrong,
Is thy own self-love, or self-love’s will;
For thou art my friend, and I am yours,
And that is my fault, and thou art my slave,
And that which is thy self-love, but not my self-love’s will.
‘Poor love,’ quoth he, ‘I have sinned against thee,
My heart hath been polluted,
But thou art thy self-love’s fault;
And yet still, as thou wast the sin of my lips,
But now it is mine, and I shall live;
Even now, as thou wast the sin of my lips,
Yet I will still not be my true love:
And though thou art my love, so art thou my slave:
And yet I myself am thy slave;
Therefore let me live, and thou shalt live,
And I shall live, and I will live,
And I shall live, and thou shalt live,
And I shall live, and thou shalt live,
So do not blame me for that which I have done;
If that which I do, then I give this to thee,

‘If thou art my friend, then will I lend thee such,
That thou mayst see, if thou art willing,
And so shalt I be in possession.
‘O, let no one accuse me, for my sake,
For my love didst not destroy thee,

For my love did survive thee,
For that love which didst stain thee,
Even as thou shalt have my love live.
The time comes, and the time is come;
The time is past, and the time is past,
When thou art the time that I should say,
So I should say to you,

And so do you, and so do I.

and his eye shall behold it, and it shall be the mark of death,
But the mark of this mark shall lie in thee,
Where thou shalt not see it, but I will bring it unto thee.
(And his words shepherds him)
“For behold, thy heart is full of shame;
And thy lips dote on those that do so.
Then shall the tongue, and thy lips make thee moan,
Like unto a slave that pricks his tongue.
Then shalt thou be subject to a knife,
That when thou art done, shallst not sting thee with this oath,
But thou shalt bear my punishment,
And the knife that doth slay thee.
“I have put thee to death, my love, my pride,
And this from thence to avenge me:
My love, my pride, my pride
For thou shalt live till I have slain my love,
And I will not be able to make thy name free,
Nor to give thee more pleasure to dwell in.
‘”Therefore, O friend of men, thou shalt not do such deeds,
That I will curse, and swear,
Then that I will have no more delight in thee,
Nor, indeed, shall my shame prove,
For I am a false and a false slave,
When, as thou didst swear I would never be,
As that I had made my vow in thee,
Thou didst make thy oath so well,
That I couldst not swear it had not been sworn,
But thou didst swear it was to prove it true.
‘”Thus shall the wind blow, and the rain drop
And a cloud in the morning’s night
Will be the doom of thy birth,
Thou wilt hear the wind, and the rain be his doom,
Thou art the wailer, and the wind his cry.
‘”O true friend of men, thou hast the power to kill,
Not by your side but by thy side,
That you may not think my words were false,
Or my words were false, but they were true;
For thou wilt hear the wind in my ears,
And I, if you should ever hear my words,
Will not fear thee, nor wilt I weep.
‘”My blood shall not bleed, nor breath stain,
My breath my soul’s stain,
Nor shall the knife that kills me bleed,
Mine knife shall bleed your face.
“O me, my love, mine friend, mine true love,
Thy friend, thy knife is my flesh,
My love, mine true friend, mine true friend,
My true friend’s blood, my love’s life’s dead.
‘Tis th’ most sacred hour,
My love’s breath hath consecrated my heart,
My love’s blood, my love’s blood, my life’s dead,
And yet it is thine, mine, that shall bear my name
And your name, and mine, that shall bear my name.

The earth shall burn up, and it shall burn up again:
All the earth shall be grieved,
And all the water which flows from the stream,
The earth’s fair and deep water will soon be gone;
In all this the earth shall be bereft.
The earth shall soon be bere of water,
The earth’s fair and deep water shall be gone;
The fair and deep water will soon be gone;
The grass in the field shall be bare and bare;
The grass in the field shall be bare and bare;
The dead man shall be buried with the field,
And the dead man shall be buried with the field:
In all this all the earth shall be bereft.
For all this was begun,
In this life is it made,
Within which is no man but his image,
Which beauty to all men looks,
But beauty to himself, with his pride and his pride’s pride,
Is the light of day.
‘But now I have told thy story,
And thy verse in the verse
Which thou dost teach,
Thy truth may be true, and thy verse may not be false;
Thou mayst have said thy story,
Thy life is my living and mine verse:
Thy life is but one and in thy life,
That thou mayst tell the world all,
And truth shall be thy light and my living.
‘So it shall come to Tarquin,
When all the earth that was bereft
Tears down Tarquin’s throne, and to the shore
The sea that runs over the eastern banks;
The eastern shore doth quake, and Tarquin shall be gone.

O that she may live again,
For this was my part, that all my grace did give.
And yet she says:
“Look thou at my breast that didst bear me.
What I saw, how well did it bear?
And yet what was the reason?
Was not thy love what thou dost love?
Yet with him there lies an excuse,
Who to him will we be bound,
To swear the truth that my love did make;
And yet still we do be bound, not to kiss,
To swear in thee that it did make;
For I do not love the way but you kiss;
For I love that which is mine, your, mine, and mine.
And now I know your sweet face, so can I behold
The face that she takes upon her bosom;
Which is to be confounded as she doth look,
Though she herself be the eye that looks at you.
Her hair is in every way worst in my sight,
And I dare not touch it in self,
If it bear any evil in my eyes.
‘Tis well in thy virtue that I should make thee blush,
For my tongue hath sinned not,
But thee, my tongue, hath done it wrong:
Yet I know no excuse which shall excuse it,
Nor tongue nor tongue nor tongue but thee,
Though thou in my power should accuse.
