This being done, he looks up in amazement.

“My love, love!” quoth she, “‘twixt them lies the grave.
No doubt about this; thou dost think it is right,
For I love thy love quite as much;
Thy love is worth twentyfold; thou knowest no worth worse than mine.’
He then laid his hand upon his shoulder,
And in that place he did lay his lips,
And he did kiss her, and with them did sing,
And she did kiss him as if he had said she had no love.
Then she took his breast, and laid it on his breast;
And now his fingers did lend her strength,
As if they should lend the weak man a strong hand,
As if they should lend him a good hand,
So did he do, and she did bear it so.

So he drew her in a bath,
And gave her a pretty sight;
And when he gave her the bath, he showed her a nun,

In the night of darkness lies
A torch from heaven that burns the earth,
And the stars that do the work look on,
That with their own might they might be seen
In the night of a deep sleep;
Who might say, “If it were so,” to the deep-dreaming
Of Lucrece’s heart?
Who dare say, “Oh! what a fright!”
But all the tender wails of that dreadful night,
Are but soft whispers from his lips.
I must be gone: what am I,
That is the subject of this story?
I am dead, all is gone, and that’s all gone.
That I might not weep so sore,
To die in the way of love is dead,
And, like a maundy flower, I think it to be dead.
So far from it’s own light,
A dark night of cold night doth shine.
